Join us for our popular monthly social gathering, where there’ll be live music, signature drinks, and extended viewing hours in our galleries. We’re celebrating our rich African heritage at February’s First Friday: Black History Month/African Edition!
The event will be hosted by Sahara FM Radio, Africa's newest station for arts, music and politics, and emceed by the station’s own 'Olu,' the Humble Prince.
With our extended viewing hours, explore our two new exhibitions: Curators’ Choice: Black Life Matters and Coming Home: Remembering.
We will also showcase a mini African Film Festival sponsored by SunnEvents from 3pm to 7pm in the American Negro Theatre. We’ll screen the Kenyan film Pumzi, a short sci-fi film, Mother of George, a Nigerian-American drama, and Soul Power, a concert documentary set in Zaire.
DJ Nani will be spinning tracks in our Langston Hughes lobby, expressing the unique sounds of Africa that will further enhance our theme of the evening.
The dance and drumming group, AsaseYaa, will also give a performance.This First Friday event will feature hors d'oeuvres from New York African Restaurant Week, a bi-annual cultural event celebrating the best of African cuisine, wine, chefs, artisans and restaurants across the city. Season Pot Catering will also provide appetizers that honor the rich South African history.
